Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and complex character building—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths only possible by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
